Have you ever subscribed to a mailing list that you really enjoyed and got a lot of really valuable information from? Have you then watched that list over the years deteriorate into mind numbing squabbles over the most unimportant drivel? Such is my experience with the Provo Linux Users Group (PLUG) mailing list. There was a time that I got a lot of valuable information from the list. I was exposed to new insights and received a lot of help with tough problems. Now the list is full of devout evangelists insisting that their personal preference is the way everyone should do things. The issues discussed on the list range from whether or not the world should be using Ruby, Lisp or OCaml to write software or why people who top-post should be put to death. I’m not exaggerating with the death thing. It’s too bad the list has degraded so badly but some good things just don’t last. So, I finally unsubscribed from the PLUG mailing list and frankly, it feels refreshing.
